RLA's Juliana Gajic, the No. 3 seeded player, was upset by Skylar Morton in the second round at the ITF International Grass Courts tournament being played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Morton eliminated Gajic, 6-3, 6-3. Gajic and her partner were also beaten in the first round of doubles. Gajic is currently ranked No. 173 in the world ITF junior girls' rankings.

The Roddick Lavalle Academy would like to congratulate former player Johanna Konta for winning the recent USTA $50,000 Challenger singles event in Raleigh, N.C. Konta had to come back from being down 5-2 in the second set to force a third and eventually win the $7,200 first-place prize money. Currently representing Australia, Konta beat American Lindsay Lee-Waters in the final.

Former Roddick Lavalle Academy director John Roddick has led the Oklahoma men's tennis team to its most successful season in program history as the Sooners made their first appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships. After upsetting No. 3 Texas in the Round of 16, OU faced Roddick's alma mater No. 11 Georgia in the quarterfinals and fell 4-0. OU finished the season 19-8.

Roddick Lavalle Academy players had some exceptional performances turned in at the recent Northside Fiesta Junior Open in San Antonio with J.R. Leonik winning the boys' 18s singles title. He beat fellow RLA player Nick Mikulcic in the final. The two also teamed to win the doubles title.

Thirteen-year-old Regina Clark turned heads by making the finals in the girls' 18s while Eduardo Bringold (boys' 16s) and Joey Vatanadilok (boys' 14s) took home winner's trophies in their respective divisions. Vatanadilok and Enrique Pellegrin won the 16s doubles and Gayathri Evani was the consolation singles winners in the girls' 12s.

San Antonio's Juliana Gajic met one of the U.S.'s top junior tennis prospects on Saturday, falling to 14-year-old Florida sensation Sachia Vickery, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals at the USTA International Spring Championships.

Gajic, who trains at the Roddick Lavalle Academy in San Antonio, was well aware of the Vickery name and her big game. "I just didn't come out aggressively in the first set," Gajic said. "I was a little defensive and was making silly mistakes. I was able to pick up my game a little in the second set."

San Antonio's Juliana Gajic has advanced to the semifinals of one of the top junior tennis tournaments in the nation, beating unseeded Sarah Lee of Los Angeles on Friday at the USTA International Spring Championships.

Gajic, who trains at the Roddick Lavalle Academy in San Antonio, broke Lee's serve at 3-1 to take control of the first set on her way to the 6-1, 6-3 win at the ITF Grade 1 tournament.

Competing against the world's best is always the top goal for the tennis directors at Roddick Lavalle, a full-time tennis boarding school located on the north side of San Antonio. And that's exactly what Gajic and J.R. Leonik are doing this week and next in Southern California.

Leonik lost his first-round match in Carson but next week travels two hours east to take part in the 44th annual Easter Bowl Spring National Championships in the Palm Springs area.

Competing at the ATA Spenco Spring Open in Austin, Texas, Roddick Lavalle's Eduardo Bringold won the boys 16's Super Champs singles and Enrique Pellegrin took home second in the Boys 14's Super Champs.

Leo Lavalle at the Monterrey Open
Roddick Lavalle's Leo Lavalle conducted a Kids' Day Clinic at the WTA Monterrey Open in Mexico which was attended by 75 local children. Leo, in orange shirt, conducted the clinic with assistance from WTA players Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Corinna Dentoni.

 

February 2010:
Congratulations to Roddick Lavalle Academy's Madeleine Bailey and Alec Falgout for moving up to Champs in the USTA Texas section. Juliana Gajic recently won the singles G5 ITF in Guatemala and J.R. Leonik made the finals of doubles in the G5 in Guatemala. Malisa Vatanadilok won a recent Champs tournament and will next move up to Super Champs events.
